2. Dog Toys
We like: Snuggle Puppy w/ Heartbeat & Heat Pack
We recommend getting lots of different textured toys to help when your puppy starts teething/chewing. However, we think it’s especially important to get a plush toy to rub on litter mates and mama that way you can bring back the scent of your pup’s family back home with you. Check out the Snuggle Puppy which also includes heat pads and a ticking heart to help your puppy sleep at night. Very popular and works well!
3. Dog Crate
We like Frisco Fold and Carry Crates
We crate train all of our puppies and if you’re bringing your puppy home by yourself it’s important to have something to contain your puppy. We love and still use the same Frisco Crate we bought for Oreo over 15 years ago. Just be sure to choose the correct size. Depending on how big your dog will get, you may want to buy a larger one at the start just so you know your puppy will still fit in it when they grow over the months.
4. Chews
We like: Best Bully Sticks
If you never had a puppy then get ready for some unwanted chewing of among other things furniture, clothes, shoes, hands, and feet. A good dog chew will help redirect this unwanted behavior until your puppy matures and sheds his puppy teeth. Our favorite dog chew for Oreo was Bully Sticks.
5. Leash
We like: 6 Way Multifunctional Leather Dog Leash
We ended up getting two leashes for Oreo:
- A short drag line which is a light weight 4 or 6 foot nylon leash(we usually get the “small” 6 foot leash or the “medium” 4 foot leash)
- A leather training leash – we like these convertible leather leashes
6. Collar
We like: Nylon Buckle Collar
No need to go fancy here. A simple nylon buckle collar does the trick as they will out grow their collar in no time. So be prepared to get another one or a harness.
7. Nametags
You can purchase Pet Tags online.
Very important that you have this for your new puppy! The two essentials we include are puppy’s name and phone number. You hope it never happens, but if for some unfortunate reason your little fur ball goes missing, having identification on him can be a life saver!
8. Puppy Blanket
We like: Frisco Linen Blanket
We also bring a blanket to rub on our puppy’s litter mates then we put the blanky in the crate so our puppy feels a little more comfortable their first few nights in their new home.
9. Puppy Food
We like Purina
We fed Oreo premium dog food. Our puppy food of choice is Purina.
There are many other good dog food on the market these days and companies have now realized that dog owners expect good natural quality ingredients in their dog food. No more fillers or other ingredients that have no benefit to the growth and health of your dog.
10. Dog Bowls
We like basic Stainless Steel Dog Bowls
A simple stainless steel food and water bowl will do the trick. No need to get extravagant here. Simple to use and clean.
11. Stain & Odor Remover
We like Rocco & Roxie Stain and Odor Eliminator
Guess what? Your puppy is going to have accidents in the house. There will always be a miscue and accident. Never fear Rocco & Roxie makes a great stain & odor remover that we use with our puppies.
QUICK TIPS: Always use an enzymatic cleaner that will completely eliminate the smell of urine. Your dog’s sense of smell is thousands to millions of times better than yours so make sure you have a cleaner that does the job right like Rocco & Roxie.
12. Treats
We like American Journey Beef Recipe Grain-Free Soft & Chewy Training Bits Dog Treats
When do you start training your puppy? The day you get him! Whether or not you decide to train your puppy with treats (you should! And Clicker Training) it’s still important to have treats for your puppy. We like these treats as they are perfect for training your little puppy. Easy to carry and just the right size!
13. Dog Brush/Comb
We like…see below…a few..
Depending on the breed you may need specialized brushes and combs to keep a well groomed coat. If not, your dog’s fur can get knotted in short time. We recommend a couple brushes and will depend on the type of breed of dog you have:
- Basic Two-Sided Pin Brush– good standard brush for all dogs.
- Slicker Brush – for removing mats and tangles for long coated dogs.
- Furminator – very good for helping reducing the shedding of your dog.
14. Puppy Shampoo
We like Tropi Clean plus this cute puppy bundle
You don’t want to use harsh human products or even a dog shampoo might be too much for your puppy’s delicate skin. This one is hypoallergenic and works great! Plus, we also recommend checking out the Puppy Treat Box that comes with shampoo plus some other great puppy goodies!
15. Rags / Towels/ Paper Towels
We like whatever we can find around the house
These are just handy to have around the house and vehicle just in case your puppy has accidents. Could be a little pee or poop on the floor or even in your vehicle! Having these on hand make clean up quick.

You got the crate but it is nice to make it comfortable for your puppy so they don’t mind going in and taking a nap!
17. Dog Bed
We like the Sofa Style Dog Bed
We like beds that are washable and of course comfy! This bed is great as it looks like a sofa which dogs seem to love to jump on. This could be placed on your sofa as well if you wanted to protect your furniture and allow your dog to sit up with you.
18. Puppy Pee Pads
We like Wee Wee Pads
You should train your puppy to potty outside. However, I know that potty training outside is not always an option but should be used only when getting your puppy outside is not an option.
19. Poop Bags
We like Earth Rated Dog Poop Bags
When you are out and about with your new puppy, do not leave home without these! Remember to always have something to scoop the poop when out in public.
20. Gate
We like Regalo Baby Gate
Gates are a great way to keep you puppies confined to only certain rooms in your house. Also converts as a baby gate! Kind of a two for one!
21. Travel Kennel
We like Pet Nation Porta-A-Crate
A travel kennel is great for when you take your dog on the road. This one is collapsible and easier to carry then your regular crate.
22. Dog Toothbrush & Paste
We like Arm & Hammer Toothbrush Set
It’s a good idea to get your puppy used to the toothbrush and toothpaste, but usually don’t introduce them on day one. But it is important to start brushing their teeth on a regular basis.
23. Harness
We like PetSafe Easy Walk No Pull Harness
An alternative to a regular collar and leash, you may want to start using a no-pull harness to help with puppies that like to pull on walks. The Easy Walk Harness is perfect for this so you don’t end up choking your little one.
24. Clicker
We like this Clicker on Amazon
We prefer our clicker to have a wristband so we can let it hang freely when working with our pups.
It’s a very effective way to train and communicate with your puppy. Don’t forget, our number 1 thing to get for your puppy! Brain Training For Your Dog!
25. Treat Pouch
We like PetSafe Treat Pouch
This is perfect and handy for training your puppy. This pouch is easy to open for easy access to treats.
If you’re going to clicker train your puppy then get a treat pouch. We tried using our pockets a few times and it gets messy and guess what? If you leave some treats in your pocket…your dog will find them or they just might get a good washing in your washing machine!
26. Food Container
We like Airtight Pet Food Container
These are handy to keep our dog food fresh.
27. Books
We like Puppies for Dummies
We think this is a nice compliment to the Brain Training For Dogs. It just is a nice book to have on hand to easily pick up and learn everything you can before, during, and after bringing home your puppy.
Puppies for Dummies is a great starter book and will give you a solid foundation in puppy training basics on top of the more expert training provided by your Brain Training For Dogs program.
28. Pooper Scooper
We like 4Paws Pooper Scooper
Not a necessity really, but can come in handy if you have a big yard. Most times, we use poop bags but if you let the clean up go for awhile in your yard…this can make the job a little more easy and quicker.
29. Veterinarian/24 hr Emergency Vet
Obvious one here but make sure you have an established Vet and know who to call in case of an emergency!
30. Pet Sitter/Walker
Sometimes it just takes talking to friends, family, and neighbors about getting a little help when you’re at work or need a break from your puppy. If those aren’t options there are online services, individual pet sitters/walkers, or even check with your local doggy daycare facility.
31. Boarding
There may be a time when you need to board your puppy. Start researching facilities in your area or start checking with family, friends, and neighbors to see if they might be able to board your puppy when you need a vacay.
32. Pet Insurance
Pet insurance has become a big business now. And for good reason! Vet bills are not cheap. We had a few with Oreo, nothing to crazy..like 400 to 500 dollars unexpected bills but friends rang up bills of over 5K for their dog! If not for pet insurance they would not have been able to afford that and would have had to make an awful decision! Not trying to scare you here, but insurance is a good thing…just like you have on your house and car..you never know!
